DT Wire Tray Wall Decor

It’s time for our monthly blog hop challenge hosted by Beverly @Across the Blvd. This month’s theme is a Dollar Store Craft. The participants were challenged to create a project using mostly items from a dollar store.
Occasionally you can find some very chic and out of the ordinary looking items while shopping at the Dollar Tree!  How about a gold wire tray and basket? I had to do a double take when I saw them and actually looked around to see if anyone was watching me. Lol! 


And as the description for the wire basket stated, it gives off a vintage chic vibe that will compliment any home decor! Imagine that! So I grabbed one of each, but didn't have a clue as to what I would do with them. I know they make great storage pieces - perfect for keeping things like decorative cardstock in the tray or fruit in the basket. But wait a minute! For the wire basket, DT said it was perfect to store blankets and pillows or turn it upside down to make a table. What, for dolls? I think someone got the descriptions mixed-up on this one. The round basket is only 4.75 inches high. Oh well, it's still nice! But for the Dollar Store Challenge, I'd rather focus on the gold wire tray - using it as a decorative piece instead of a storage unit. 

Let's begin with gathering a few Dollar Tree supplies!
  • Gold Wire Tray
  • Paper Napkins
  • Gold Floral Wire
  • Mod Podge
Plus:  Glass bottle
         Paint brush/Scissors
         Plastic sandwich bag
         Wire cutter
         DIY Crepe paper flowers or faux flowers


First,  clean the bottle with soap and water and dry. Then wipe the glass using an alcohol dampen paper towel to remove any residual dirt and grime which might be left. Next, take a colorful paper napkin and decide how you want the design on the glass and cut it out.  

Separate the layers of the paper napkin - using only the printed top layer.
Again, measure the cut-out napkin by wrapping it around the bottle to see how much is needed. 


Then cut it out to fit the bottle. 

                    
Next, brush a light layer of Mod Podge on the front of the bottle .  .  .
and lay the napkin (printed side up) on top of the decoupage glue. Insert your hand into plastic bag and begin smoothing out the napkin. Continue adding Mod Podge to the glass and smoothing the napkin out using the plastic bag - going around the bottle in sections until all of the bottle is covered with the napkin design.  Use the brush to apply a little extra decoupage glue along the seam and under curves along the edges. 

Once the napkin has dried, apply another coat of decoupage glue over the entire napkin area to seal and let dry.


Then use the gold floral wire to attach the bottle to the wire tray by wrapping the wire around the neck of the bottle and tray several times and twisting together in place, cutting off excess wire.



Now it's time to add the flowers!

Faux Mosaic Glass Pumpkin

We all love seeing dollar store hacks that look like high end decorations. And who doesn't love taking your decor to the next level without spending a small fortune. So let's glam it up for Fall by making a gorgeous pumpkin in a mosaic style. Here's a fun and simple technique that uses reflective tape from the Dollar Tree to achieve the look of a faux mosaic glass pumpkin! How cool is this! 

But before we get started with the tutorial, please "Like" me on Facebook! I'm trying to recoup all of my likes I lost when FB deleted my first Purple Hues and Me page for unknown reasons! Thanks so much - I really appreciate you!

Materials Needed:
  • Foam Pumpkin (Dollar Tree)
  • Reflective 15ft Roll Tape - (Dollar Tree)
  • Utility Knife (Dollar Tree)
  • Clay Dough (Dollar Tree)
  • Skewer Stick
  • Paint/Foam Brush 
  • Parchment Paper
  • Scissors

Let's begin by painting the foam pumpkin metallic silver (not shown). Then take a piece of clay .  .  . 
and knead it to make it soft and pliable  .  .  .
rolling it into a cylinder shape.
Adjusting the size to be fatter at one end - to attach to the pumpkin body by shaping the end into a flat circular shape .  .  .
and scooping out a portion of the clay .  .  .
to fit over the existing knobby stem. Make lines and grooves similar to a real pumpkin stem down the sides with a skewer stick.   
Use a craft knife to add design to the base and then give the stem a twist and curve to complete the shape.
Because of the adhesive back, it's easier to cut up the reflective tape into irregular triangles, diamonds, rectangles and square shapes by placing tape strips on parchment paper first.
And then place the pieces in random patterns around the entire pumpkin. Allowing just a bit of space between each one to mimic grout.
And finally, paint the pretty stem with a matching metallic acrylic craft paint to complete the look.
Looks perfect in a tablescape or displayed on a mantle - or anywhere in your home for a one-of-a-kind look in decor!

Dollar Store Slippers Gnome Ornament

It's that time again for our Monthly Challenge Blog Hop!
I've joined a group of creative bloggers to bring you a monthly challenge blog hop. On the 2nd Monday of each month we share our themed creations for the month.  This month it's a Dollar Store Craft!  And who doesn't love creating something awesome using items from the dollar store!

 Gnomes continues to be quite popular and trendy this holiday season! They are  the absolute cutest and can be found just about everywhere in all kinds of materials, colors, shapes, and sizes!  And they're also the perfect addition to almost any type of holiday decor! So I've jumped on the band wagon to create my own using plaid slippers from the Dollar Tree!

I hope the first thing you thought when you saw this wasn't, "Oh no she didn't! I can't believe she destroyed a perfectly good pair of slippers to make this gnome ornament!" Well, yes I did! But please remember they were just a dollar!  Besides, I bought an extra pair to wear around the house! I couldn't resist! They are so cool and comfortable! Cool as a pair of slippers and cool as a gnome ornament, too! And the best part, you really don't need to spend anymore than a couple of dollars to make this adorable ornament! You better believe it! And I'm sure you have all the other items you'll need in your stash to put it together, too!

 Materials:
Dollar store faux fur lined slippers
Dollar store nude foot-ped
Seam Ripper or craft knife
Cardstock to draw hat template
Fabric glue or hot glue
Fiber-fil or cotton ball
Cardboard
Twine/thick thread

 Let's start by taking the slippers apart. I used a craft knife to break the side seams and I'm sure a seam ripper would be much easier for this, but I couldn't find mine - too much clutter right now, lol! 
The best thing about opening up the seam is that the faux fur lining separates from the sole completely into one piece.  And it's perfect to use for the beard!
Next, lay out the opened slippers and cut off just enough to make the hat! Save the rest for another awesome project!

Then, make a template of a gnome's hat out of cardstock - I purposely drew the hat to include the curvature of the slipper - it's a great spot for the nose! Next, place the pattern on top of the slipper fabric .  .  .

and cut out.
Place right sides (plaid)together and run a bead of glue along the inside edges, leaving the bottom open. Firmly press the edges together and let dry completely.
Once dry, turn the hat inside out. Oh boy, doesn't this look awesome!
Next, fold the faux fur from the sole in half, coating with glue inside to seal the piece together and let dry.
Insert faux fur at the fold into the bottom of hat, adjusting fit and gluing in place.

Then round off the shape of the beard with scissors.

Don't you just love how it's taking shape!
To make the nose - take a small amount of fiber-fil or a cotton ball from the medicine cabinet, and shape into a ball .  .  .
stuffing it in the toe area of the foot-ped and tying the ball tight with a cut-off strip from the ped.
Then cut off the excess fabric .  .  .
and glue nose onto center curve, just below hat edge.
Make a hanger by wrapping twine around cardboard - grouping in three, 
3 strands and tying in a knot .  .  .
to braid.
Once braided, fold twine braid to make a loop, adding glue to ends and insert into center top of hat for hanger. Let dry.

What a fun and easy way to add a bit of whimsy to your holiday tree this season!
