Spooning

Have you heard of the word spooning?  I sure hadn't, not until I came across a craft post here.  I thought this so cute to make for my niece and her husband's upcoming anniversary.  Their last name is Witherspoon and they call each other Mr. and Mrs. Spoon.  How cute is that?

Well, I had to look up the word spooning cause it doesn't sound that good.  But I found out it really doesn't have anything to do with sex .  .  . although it might lead to it.   It's a form of cuddling and anyone can spoon together. You can read more about it online.

To get started, I already had a shadow box frame, although it wasn't very deep.
I went to a couple of places looking for silver or silver plated spoons and couldn't find any.  Bloggers write about finding tons and tons of these things, but when I try, they're no where to be found .  .  . at least in this area. Anyway, Goodwill had boxes of old stainless steel spoons so I settled for two at 25 cents apiece.  One slightly larger than the other. I spray painted them with bright silver paint so they would look uniform and not slightly used.

This gift was breeze to make.  I took the easy way out and used some stick on white vinyl lettering since the board was a faux black velvet. No stenciling here.

I put strips of painter's tape on the board so I could line up the letters.

My spacing was off with the 2" letters so I had to make three lines of wording.

After lining up the lettering, I glued the spoons down using E6000 and allowed to dry overnight.

Since it is a gift I placed the finished piece on a stand to see how it would look.  Marvelous!

Anyone visiting their home would get a kick out of seeing this.  I know I would.

What a great play on words, Mr. & Mrs. Spoon!
This is for you!

Happy Anniversary!!!

Take a little time to enjoy,

PS: My niece sent me this  Patricia Witherspoon's photo.

Burlap Leaf TableRunner

Fall is in the air and we all know what that means . . . new fall projects!  I found pretty orange burlap in the remnant section at Hobby Lobby and couldn't resist the price - a couple of dollars for almost two yards of fabric.  Hot d ...!  I've always wanted to make a whimsical fall table runner, something quirky and different.  If you follow me on my blog, you know I can do quirky and different.
I'm not good at drawing so I copied a leaf and blew it up as much as I could to fill a 8½"x11" sheet of paper. Then I cut it out and used it as a pattern on my burlap which is really a vibrant shade of orange. So beautiful!

I doubled the fabric and cut two out at a time. I guess I could have made more than one pattern .  .  .

After cutting out the leaves, I outlined the edges with white puffy paint and let dry for four hours following the directions.

It took about three bottles to outline 28 leaves.

After the puffy paint dried I held a steam iron over the leaves to puff the paint.

Next, I laid out the leaves in a pattern with a row of leaves down the center, flanked by leaves on each side, making them all touch. I glued where they met with Aileen's Extra Tacky Glue.

I love the design!

Do you think it's quirky and different?

It sure didn't take long to make!

And I still have a little less than a yard of the orange burlap left. Who knows what I'll make next!

Take a little time to enjoy,

Naturally (Raffia?) Wired Candle Holder

I'm sure all of you have passed over this item frequently in the floral department of craft stores. I've done it myself and each time I think, I'm going to make something out of that one day.  Well the day is here and I've come up with a quick and easy décor item you can make for a summer/autumn gathering or just give as a gift.

Forty feet of wire wrapped in what looks like a rusty brown shade of raffia or a floral green shade called Naturally Wired for a mere couple of dollars (using a coupon) turned out to be a crafter's delight!

All you need to make this quirky looking candle holder is a vessel to wrap the wired around, needle nose wire cutter, and the naturally wired.  THREE items!  And it only takes a few minutes to do!

Step One:  Roll the wire around a round, smooth, and sturdy vessel approximately eight times.  I would recommend using something slightly smaller than the candle holder you want to display. This way you can wrap the wire tighter and then once you slide it off, the coils will open wider and fit better.  You can adjust the coils as you like.

Step Two:  Wrap a single wire around the candle holder you are planning to use so that it will fit.  This will be the base.  Cut and close the ends.  (The raffia had a tendency to unravel at the ends.  You can  put a little glue on it or leave as is).

Step Three:  Slide the coiled wire from the vessel, keeping the coils together and insert the single coil through the loops and close the ends together.

Step Four:  Spread the coils down and around forming a circular shape by pressing down.

Step Five:  Place the candle in the center of the base. And with the palms of both hands,

(This looks adorable flat, too!)

gently lift the sides of the loops around the candle. And  .  .  .Voila!

                                             Easy peasy?  Yes!

These airy candle holders will surely add a lovely rustic touch to your autumn table settings or festive gatherings!  Hope you'll make some soon!

Take a little time to enjoy!

Burlap Bow Pillow

Back in the spring I posted how I reupholstered my hubby's valet chair.  Well, I've finally gotten around to making a pillow out of the leftover fabric.  Since I had some burlap in the exact same lavender shade as in the fabric, I decided to make a bow to sew on the pillow that would blend the two together.  I know a bow is not something to add as an embellishment on a pillow for a manly valet.  But I have a small sofa near the chair in our bedroom and I think adding a matching pillow on it would make the room and furniture flow together a bit better.

Those of you who follow my blog know that always give step by step instructions.  I like reading how something is made and I hope you do too.

Using a 15 inch pillow insert, I cut out a square pattern 14x14 inches that included a 1/2 seam all around.  I wanted the pillow form to fit snug, corner to corner.  I thought placing the bow on the diagonal would give it a more "together" look.  To make the bow,  I lightly drew a rectangular form 7 inches wide diagonally on the square pattern.  Going across, corner to corner, measured 20 inches and I added two more for the 1/2 inch seam allowance and fullness of the pillow, for a total 22 inch length for the bow.

I made a pattern of this and also a 4x4 inch square for the knot and cut them out.

I also cut out the 14 inch square, front and back of the scripted fabric (not shown) and the bow and knot in the burlap (below).

Instead of stitching down the 1/2 inch seam allowance, I glued the seam with fabric glue.  In hindsight, I should have folded a 1/4 inch edge and folded it again and machine basted.  I used Aileen's Fusion Fabric glue which proved to be messy, seeping through the open weave of the burlap.

To make the knot, I folded right sides together lengthwise and stitched a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Next, I turned the knot right side out, with the seam in the middle of one side, turning the ends inward and pressing flat.
Gathering the bow in the middle, placed the knot around the center of the bow and slip-stitched the ends securely.

Next, I pinned the bow diagonally across the front section with right sides facing up and basted the raw corner edges in place.

With rights sides together, I pinned the front section with the bow to the back section and stitched, leaving an opening in the lower edge.  Trimmed the corners and turned the pillow right side out, making sure the bow was straight.

Inserted the pillow form, getting the edges into the corners and slip-stitched the opening closed.

                                                       TA  DA .  .   .  Stunning!

The back of the pillow  .  .  .  on the valet chair.

Cozily placed on the sofa next to a throw.

                                                     Front  .   .   .

Back of the pillow, again.

I think it's a keeper.  What do you think?

Take a little time to enjoy!
