Halloween Pumpkin Witch

Believe it or not, I am one of those crafters who really doesn't decorate for Halloween. And I have a legitimate excuse, too - I have no grandkids or young people in my life and I live in a 55+ community where no treat or trickers come!  But I do belong to a monthly blog hop where this month's theme is Halloween Crafts!

I was looking around my stash wondering what I could make for this challenge. Lo and behold I had a paper mache pumpkin with a texture that reminded me of a witch!

So I decided to decorate this pumpkin to resemble a witch - the iconic mistress of Halloween - the wicked witch with her tall pointy hat, crooked nose, and toothy grin! How cool would it be and a fun decorating idea to combine the two!

So I gathered the supplies:

  • Paper Mache Pumpkin
  • Black posterboard
  • Plates
  • Pencil, scissors, masking tape, quick grab glue (Fabri-tac), ruler
  • Yarn, lace
  • Packing crate material
  • Eyes, mouth clipart

How To:

Let's start with making the witch's hat! Begin by laying a sheet of poster board on your work surface. I always keep lots of poster boards in my stash to use in my photo ops! You can get them 2 for $1 at the Dollar Tree!

Starting near a corner on the poster board paper begin rolling the paper into a cone shape.

                  \

Once you have the cone shape, mark a line for the edge using a pencil. Use masking tape to hold the cone in place and cut off the excess posterboard.

Then trim the bottom of the cone.

Seal the side of the cone by adding quick grab glue along the edge. I used the end of a bamboo stick to dip in the glue and smooth it along the edge, removing the masking tape as I applied the glue.

For the brim of the hat, draw a circle using a 11 "plate as a template and cut out. Using a smaller plate (5") draw a circle in the center of the larger circle measuring the distance between the edge of the smaller circle to the edge of the larger one to make sure the smaller circle is centered on all sides. Cut out.Slide the brim over the cone to the edge. It should fit snuggly. Glue in place. Cut strips of yarn and glue around the inside cone edge, leaving space for face.

Using cardboard packing  .  .  .

cut out one of the semi-cone shapes that'll make a perfect witch's nose .  .  .
and glue onto the center of a pumpkin segment.
Add on additional decorative pieces such as tying lace around the brim .  .  .

gluing on clipart eyes .  .  .

and a toothy smile.

Oh, and of course a couple of flowers for the festive occasion!
