Upcycled Bamboo Placemat Crafts

Hey, it's time for another "Do Over" project - the first for the new year! For this craft, I'm almost too embarrassed to show you how quick and easy it is to update a plain clear glass cylinder vase! It only takes a few minutes to add an adorable bamboo covering from - you guessed it - an old bamboo placemat I've had for years! Plus, as a bonus craft - a lovely DIY frame made with the leftover bamboo slats!

Welcome to our first "Do It Over Designers" projects for the new year! In case you didn't know, the Do It Over Designers is a group of talented bloggers who love to recycle/upcycle/DIY, hosted by Anne @The Apple Street Cottage. It happens the 4th Saturday of every other month and it's all about taking something old and/or unused and 'doing it over' into something new. Anything from fabric, old dishes, and decor to dressers and hutches. Items found in closets, cabinets, barns, garages, yard sales, thrift stores, you name it! I hope you'll visit all the super creative bloggers to see their amazing "do over" projects.  The list of participants are at the end of this post.

How To:
Let's start with a 7" tall clear glass cylinder vase and a .  .  .
bamboo wood placemat, 19"x12".
After measuring the placemat around the glass vase, cut off the excess placemat slats using craft snips.
When the placemat was cut, the spacer beads between the wood slats came off and .  .  .
needed to be glued back on to the piece wrapped around the vase, using RapidFuse - a multi-purpose adhesive - to keep the space between the slats equal before .  .  .
gluing the vase cover together at the spacers. Just take a look! See, I told you is was quick and easy!
It's a perfect fit around the vase! Cool!
I love the tall slender boho look the slats give to the vase!
And the oriental grass plumes from my yard is an added plus to the vase!

Since there were a few wood slats left over, I decided to make a simple picture frame to hold one of my sentimental pictures.
Using four of the leftover slats, form a 6 1/4" square in the center by overlapping two vertical slats on top of two horizontal slats. It was easier to lay out and measure the slats on a cutting mat.
Then glue the slats together where they overlap and .  .  .
let dry.
Lay a piece of cardboard on the back and mark where the edges of the slats are.
Then cut out the cardboard following the measurements and glue it on the backside of the slats.
Afterwards, insert the treasured photo of my niece, Patricia and her rescued pup, Xena! On a side note, Patricia is wearing one of my old dresses that became too small for me, so I gave it to her! It sure does look better on her, lol!
And just like that! Another simple and easy "Do Over" project!
Both are super cute and absolutely easy to make!
I hope you enjoyed how I turned an old bamboo placemat into a lovely vase cover and a picture frame! Quick and easy! I would love it if you Pin, Share, Comment, and Follow me @ Purple Hues and Me!
