Minimalist Evafoam Oak Leaf Wreath

My taste for diy wreaths run towards a simplistic design. I don't like a lot of gaudiness or froufrou in making my wreaths. You know the old saying, less is more! Well I was inspired to make an evafoam oak leaf wreath from a festive Norwegian design wreath I saw online. I bet right now you're going "wow" how did she come up with that?  Just take a look at this picture:

These are felt snowflakes but I first thought they were oak leaves. I know oak leaves are not white. Silly me! But their shapes remind me of oak leaves! Just look at this drawing of an oak leaf:

Do you see what I mean looking at the wreath? The similarities? I had to look really hard for the "snowflake" design. And you know Norwegian designs are minimalistic, too! So since I was visualizing oak leaves, I decided to make a minimalist oak leaf wreath for fall using evafoam. A modern take, if you will! What an inspiration, lol! Perfect for this month's Creative Craft Hop, hosted by Sara @Birdz of a Feather!

Materials Used:

  • Orange Evafoam
  • Oak leaf template (using thin cardboard)
  • Scissors
  • Bamboo stick
  • Willow wreath form
  • Hot glue gun/glue sticks
  • Bow ribbon
How To:

Unfortunately, I don't have any oak trees near me to collect real oak leaves to use to make a wreath. Although oak leaves change to beautiful colors in the fall, they usually stay on the tree and fall off during spring. I love the shape of the oak leaf and have no problem creating some out of evafoam - one of my favorite craft mediums. First, I found a free oak leaf clipart online that I downloaded,  copied, pasted - and printing it out on regular paper. Then cut out the paper leaf and  .  .  .

drew the outline on a sheet of cardboard to use as a template. The cardboard leaf proved to be sturdier to use in cutting out lots of leaves. I doubled the evafoam sheet - cutting out two leaves at a time while watching tv, lol  .  .  .

for a total of 32 leaves.

Once all the leaves were cut out, I added "veins" using a bamboo stick. The fun thing about foam sheets is that you can pull, twist, stretch and even heat the material to help shape whatever you're working on. But I like the simplicity of how the leaves looked, so I didn't do much manipulation of the foam. But if you're really curious about what you can do with evafoam, checkout what I made here, here and here.  But for this wreath, I took a modern approach to making these oak leaves.
After adding all the veins, I started hot gluing the leaves onto the willow wreath form that I got a few years ago from the Dollar Tree.

Once I was satisfied with the fullness of all the leaves on the form .  .  .
added a homemade bow to complete the look!
