DIY Fashion Belt - Shopping My Stash

I'm tired of running to the craft stores.  Maybe it's the lazy, hazy days of summer but I'm just tired of looking and not being inspired by what I see.

Lately, I've been shopping my house and using what I find to make a few projects.  I came across some left over pleather from  when I made  a no-sew clutch and a necklace hereI thought it would be so easy to make a fashion belt out of the scraps.

Here's how:
First, you need to make a sturdy cardboard template of the design. I wanted something bold and loopy .  .  . taking me back to the '70's when wide belts were cool.

The pattern needs to be even when folded and the center tapered.

Measure the length of the template and the waist size needed.  Draw your pattern on the back of  the pleather, estimating the number needed for the length of belt.   I wanted this belt to be loose and drapey so I drew 20 total. Oh, I have no waistline!

 And then cut them out.

Before I put the belt buckle on, I tested putting the loops together first to see how they fit.  I found that I needed to glue down the loops for a neater look when putting the belt together.

Next, I made a small slit in the center of the fabric and inserted the buckle.
Easy, peasy!

I would have liked to use a large or fancy buckle but this is all I had available.

From there it was quite simple to put the belt together by using tacky glue on each loop.  After adding several loops, try it on to see the fit.

Once at the end loop just insert that into the buckle for closure.  No holes, so effortless, right!

Do you like?

Now, if I could just find my bell bottoms!

Take a little time to enjoy

and

Happy Crafting!

    1. It’s plastic coated leather that’s been stripped of its outer layer and it doesn’t last

  4. I do like this. I do not wear belts, but I think this would make a great handle for a basket or wooden box. And I do have some pleather, suede and leather sitting around. Is it difficult to cut?

  6. It's too easy to go and buy something new when we could just 'shop' at home. I'm not very crafty but I find that I get some good ideas from those of you who are. Thanks for sharing your clever idea.

  14. Get a matching leather dye at craft stores or shoe repair or leather craft supply and dye the edges to match before you put it together for a more finished look. Don't use shoe polish, it will come off on your clothes.

  17. That is a good homage to the 70's! The belt looks difficult to make, but your steps have proven otherwise! All a person needs is a bit of creativity and imagination. And lucky you, you’ve got tons of 'em! Cheers!
