Snowflake Tree Skirt DIY

I started a  new holiday tradition of making a Christmas tree skirt.  Last year I made a poinsettia tree skirt and it has proven to be quite popular.  This year I'm all about making snowflakes.  Snowflakes help to make winter an adorable time of year.  They are so unique, festive, and amazingly beautiful!  So why not make a tree skirt adding the uniqueness of a snowflake pattern?

Here's how:

Tree Skirt

The plain skirt portion is the same as I made for the poinsettia skirt - done in felt, quick and easy in thirty minutes or less. Here are the steps:

White felt  (60 square inches)
1 bulldog clip
String
Pencil ( I used a pencil so I could see the lines on the white felt) or Tailor's chalk
Scissors
Small plate

1. Fold the felt in half to create a triangle. Fold the triangle in half to create another smaller triangle.

2. Use the bulldog clip to attach one end of a long string to the folded corner of the fabric. Tie the string to  the top of the pencil. Holding the string taut, swing your "compass" from edge to edge in a quarter-circle, drawing an arc with the pencil. Cut along the pencil marks.

3. With the fabric still folded and using the small plate as a guide, trace an arc onto the folded, 90-degree corner of the felt. Leave it folded, and use scissors to cut along the trace marks.

4. Unfold the felt halfway, and cut a slit along one of the folds from the edge of the circle cutout in the middle to the edge of the felt.
5. Set the 60 inch diameter skirt aside while you make the snowflakes.

Snowflakes

I wanted a simple snowflake pattern with no open shapes or holes. After looking at so many snowflakes online, I found one that I thought would work.  I forgot to bookmark it and couldn't find the site again.  I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding one you like.  Since I needed twenty-two snowflakes for the skirt, the easiest way to cut them out was to completely cover the pattern over the felt with cellophane tape and then cut them out.  The felt is not damaged in anyway and is secure while cutting. One yard of 72" wide felt was more than enough to make 22 snowflakes.

I used several of the same pattern to cut out the 22 snowflakes...

And next outlined them with glitter glue. . .

Added rhinestones to the points. . .

Pinned them in place and attached half of the snowflake to the skirt using Fabri-Tac glue.

And finally glued silver sparkly stones to the center of each snowflake.

Like a real snowflake, this tree skirt is one of a kind, unique, festive and fun!

Each snowflake is hand cut and highlighted with silver "crystals" to make this a glistening holiday favorite!

Why not wrap up your holiday decorating with a wintry wonderland of white snowflakes.

So easy to make. . .treat yourself to a one of a kind family tradition to proudly display your presents and decorations this holiday season and for years to come.

Happy Holiday Crafting!

  3. I really love this. My old tree skirt is so shabby that I don't want to use it anymore, and I haven't liked any of the ones I've seen in stores.

  5. Hey! This post showed up in my inbox! (happy dance!) I love this skirt..maybe even as much as the poinsettia one! My tree is a table top tree, so I should be able to do this on a smaller scale. Your packages are gorgeous by the way!

  8. Wondering how you know how many snowflakes to make? And what size should they be. I love this idea and want to make it in blue/white and silver for my daughter for Christmas.

    1. Once I found the snowflake pattern that I wanted (I enlarged it to fill regular printer paper) and made the skirt, I laid the pattern out on the skirt starting at the split and just counted how many I needed. I wanted a somewhat large snowflake, half off the edge of the skirt so you could really see the design and outline.
