Textured Flowers Vase DIY

For this "Do Over" project I'm going to upcycle a Lysol Wipes container into an adorable textured flowers vase using caulk. It's a fun way to add texture, depth and dimension to outlined or sketched flowers! And you won't believe how easy it is to add character, and interest to those types of flowers giving off a three dimensional appearance.

Welcome to our "Do It Over Designers" Blog Hop! In case you haven't heard, the "Do It Over Designers" is a group of creative bloggers who love to recycle/upcycle/ DIY, hosted by  Anne @The Apple Street Cottage. It happens the 4th Saturday of every other month and it's all about taking something old and/or unused and 'doing it over' into something new. Thanks Anne for hosting this wonderful blog hop!

So let's get started by gathering the .  .  .

Supplies:

  • Lysol Wipes container (empty)
  • Box cutter knife
  • Flower image
  • Pen marker
  • Caulk tubes (Dollar Tree)
  • Scissors
  • Tools to create texture - (palette knife, spoons, small handles, brushes, etc.)
  • Paint/Sealant
  • Paint brush

How to:

First, use a box cutter knife to remove the top of an empty Lysol container.

Then make sure the container is clean inside and out - removing the label and glue residue from the outside and rinsing out the inside.

Since I can't draw a lick, I found a flower image online and .  .  .

sized it in two different shapes to draw all over the plastic container.

I have to say that I found it difficult to outline the flowers on the plastic. I tried a pencil and a regular pen but those didn't work. And the magic markers I have had very thick tips which I didn't want to use, so I ended up using a rollerball pen. I was able to draw fine lines but it was prone to smudging, as you can see.
And instead of mixing paste into a piping bag to use like most textured flowers are made from - I'm using caulk tubes from the Dollar Tree to outline, sculpt and fill-in the flower petals - creating a unique floral design using different types of tools.

It's truly a very inexpensive and easy way to add three-dimensional detail to craft projects!

Once happy with the design, wait for the caulk to dry - from a few hours to overnight.

Then have fun adding color (paint) to finish the flowers! Paint can also be used as a sealant for the caulk, too! I'm using paint I had on hand called Light Plum which is an outdoor gloss acrylic paint by FolkArt.

I didn't realize the paint was a gloss finish until after it dried. And that turned out to be great for a glossy look!

I love how the gloss paint enhances the lines and shape of the caulk!

Continue painting all of the caulk flowers .  .  .
until they're all painted!
Once the paint is dry, the pen smudges can be cleaned up with a damp paper towel or wipe.
Then have fun adding flowers of your choice into this unique
textured floral design vase.

I hope you enjoyed how I created my textured flowers vase! But don't stop here or forget that this is a blog hop!

DIY Decoupage Chinoiserie Ginger Jar with Lid

Michelle @Our Crafty Mom created the group - All Things Dollar Store - on FaceBook back in July and hosted a giveaway for the members. She created a fun craft challenge using chinoiserie napkins she provided to the winners.
The entry requirements were:
  1. The first 15 people to invite another crafty friend to join the group, (the friend must join) will receive 4 of these gorgeous napkins in the mail from her.
  2. Complete your own vase and share a finished photo with the group that will be pinned to our Dollar Store Pinterest Group Board, and possibly shared on Facebook and Instagram.. All you need to make the vase are the 4 napkins and 3 Dollar Tree supplies.
I was one of the lucky ones to receive these goodies from Michelle! And I made a decoupage chinoiserie ginger jar with lid out of them. It was fun using as many items I could get from the dollar store to make this. If you'd like to make one too, here's how -

You will need:
Glass Vase (Dollar Tree)
White Acrylic Paint (Dollar Tree)
Mod Podge (Dollar Tree)
Scissors/Craft Knife
Plastic Cling Wrap (Dollar Tree)
Paint/Foam Brush (Dollar Tree)
Styrofoam Ball
Cardboard
Twine (Dollar Store)
Wood Ball (Handle)
DAP Multi-Purpose Adhesive

Let's begin by wiping down a clean vase with alcohol to remove any grease or oil and let dry.
Then paint the vase using white acrylic paint and a sponge brush from the dollar store. Dollar Tree recently increased it's available craft items and there's a wonderful selection to choose from.
The napkin has an adorable border around the design which I cut out to use later.
Next, start tearing out large areas of the napkins to use - and tearing off the hard edges created by the scissors. I like to have feathered edges instead of straight ones when I decoupage. They blend in much better and the edges are not as defined as the straight edges when dry.

Then separate the layers of the napkin, in this case, two white layers, revealing  the printed side.
Next, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to small areas of the vase and lay the napkin down on top, smoothing out in sections because of the roundness of the vase. Use plastic wrap to smooth out any wrinkles before applying Mod Podge to the top of the napkin. A wet napkin tends to lift up or tear if smoothed out with plastic wrap.
Continue adding sections of the printed napkin layer to the vase in the same manner as before  .  .  .
until the vase is completely covered. Fill in spaces with additional pieces of napkin designs using the same method, as before. And be sure to smooth out any wrinkles using plastic wrap before adding Mod Podge on top of the napkin.  Let dry and then add a layer of Mod Podge to the entire napkin area to seal and let dry.
To Make The Lid: Place a 3-4" styrofoam ball into the open area of the vase that fits and sits evenly without falling through. Draw a line around the ball using the edge of the vase as a guide. Using a craft knife, cut the ball in half at the line mark.

Decoupaging a styrofoam ball or even a half a ball completely with a napkin can be tricky. What I tried worked for me - but as I've discovered decoupaging different items, certain techniques don't always work. Sometimes, I amaze myself that it actually worked and other times, I've failed big time. The best part with napkin decoupage, most times you can just soak it in water to remove and start over.

I found a round flat top that was a couple of inches larger than the styrofoam ball to use as a template for a circle to cut out of the napkin. Then fold the circle into four parts and cut out along the folds. Separate the layers to use the printed sides.
Next, cut slits in the bottom of the triangles so the edges would lay flat and not make more creases when adding the MP.
Then apply a thin layer of MP and smooth out the napkin piece over the area.
Next, matched up the next napkin piece and continued as before with the other  pieces until the area is covered completely and relatively smooth.
Remember the napkin border I cut out in the beginning? Trim it to fit the area around the bottom of the dome and apply with Mod Podge.
I'm loving the look, but I need to add a lip to the top for a more traditional ginger jar look! To do this, make a template out of thin cardboard .  .  .

and paint white. Since the sides of the cardboard circle was open corrugated, I glued on twine around the edges thinking it would smooth out the sides of the lip  .  .  .
but that was a big mistake.
The twine became hard and bumpy and caused the napkin to look uneven around the edges after gluing the napkin on with MP. I continued assembling the lid, though - attaching the dome shape to the lip using a multi-purpose adhesive.
Paint a small wooden ball white and decoupage the same way as the dome .  .  .
and glue it on top, completing the look!

Decorate A Dollar Store Vase

It’s time for our monthly blog hop challenge. This month’s theme is a Dollar Store Craft. The participants were challenged to create a project using mostly items from a dollar store.
Meet this month's Dollar Store Craft Challenge Participants
Purple Hues and Me

It's sometimes amazing the things you can do with a dollar store item! Take this plain pink metal vase. Truth be told, I think I've had it for at lease a couple of years. You know how you pick up things and haven't a clue as to what you might do with them. All I know is that it is a good size - bigger than most, in a great color and just a dollar! So I got two! Lol! And who can resist these cool napkins - Keep Life Simple! Amen to that! And the pink in the napkins matches the pink vase! So I won't need to paint! How about that! Of course you recognize the Mod Podge sampler size! In addition, I'm using white twine that I'll braid for this project's trim and also use faux flowers that were picked up at the dollar store, too! All, great stuff found at the dollar store!

I guess you've figured out that I'm going to decoupage the napkin onto the vase
by first, lightly applying a layer of mod podge onto the vase. Then cutting out an oval shape portion of the napkin and separating the printed layer from the plain white layer.
Next, lay the printed side on top of the mod podge, smoothing out using a plastic baggy.

 And let dry!
Next, cut eight strips of twine, 2 1/2 times the length around the napkin cut-out. Then group in two's and braid.
Measure the braided twine around the napkin and apply mod podge to the twine at the beginning and end so it won't unravel when cut. Glue on around napkin motif for border.
And finally, glue-on pretty faux flowers for a lovely effect!
And then add a bunch in the vase to brighten any room!
Keep Life Simple!
