Fall Favorite Crafts of 2012

I'm in my second season of fall crafting.  Last year was a "First" for me and I still consider myself a newbie in the Craft Blogging Society.  Right now I'm reminiscing about what I managed to accomplish last year during the fall 2012 season.

It's been a blast and a whole new world has opened up for me. All I can say is the blogging community is FABULOUS!!!  I hope you enjoy revisiting some of my favorite creations which resulted in a lot of "first" for me!

Burlap Magnolia Stem Knockoff

One of my favorite things to do is stopping by Pier1 to see what's new each season. I've gotten many inspirations by doing this.  I was there last week checking out the new fall arrivals.  There were so many handcrafted items  that inspired me.  Some, I knew would be easy to do, others, not so much.  I saw a bunch of burlap magnolia stems displayed in a large glass vase.  I thought the flowers pretty and different from your usual burlap bloom out there in blogland.  With lots of burlap leftover in my stash, I went home excited about trying to duplicate these awesome looking flowers.

The first thing I needed to do was coat the natural burlap fabric with mod podge to make it stiff and shapeable. While the burlap was drying, I made a petal pattern out of poster board, trying to mimic the petals at Pier1.  Once the fabric was dry and the petals cut out, I tried my best to shape each petal by rubbing a small ball in the center of it while cupping it in the palm of my hand to curve the burlap as pictured.  This did not work.  I then realized that the Pier1 petals had a small wire in the center.  So I got out some floral stem wire (only had brown), and painted the wire tan to match the burlap. After drying, I cut the stem wire into two inch pieces.  The wire was glued to the center using Aileen Fast Tacky Glue.  For the stamen, I taped seven q-tips together with floral tape and cut in half, dipped them in mod podge so they could swell and dry fluff & stiff, and painted after drying.

To form the flower, I swirled the petal tips around a pencil for additional shaping (you can do this before or after formation) and then hot glued four petals to the stamen first and next glued the other petals randomly layering between the gaps. using seven or eight petals per flower.

I know you're wondering what happened to the natural burlap magnolias.  I made one of each color as samples first and decided since I already had the white burlap coated with mod podge from another project, I went with using that to make all of the flowers. Besides,  I think the white magnolia flowers are prettier with the tan colored stamen and a bit more realistic (if that's possible).  I will definitely be making something else with the natural color blooms.

Oh, and I left the floral wire stem as is instead of painting them. That got to be a bit much.

I like the blooms open, but you can close them if you want.

Have you been inspired by any handcrafted favorites for Fall yet?  I sure have!

Take a little time to enjoy,

Spooning

Have you heard of the word spooning?  I sure hadn't, not until I came across a craft post here.  I thought this so cute to make for my niece and her husband's upcoming anniversary.  Their last name is Witherspoon and they call each other Mr. and Mrs. Spoon.  How cute is that?

Well, I had to look up the word spooning cause it doesn't sound that good.  But I found out it really doesn't have anything to do with sex .  .  . although it might lead to it.   It's a form of cuddling and anyone can spoon together. You can read more about it online.

To get started, I already had a shadow box frame, although it wasn't very deep.
I went to a couple of places looking for silver or silver plated spoons and couldn't find any.  Bloggers write about finding tons and tons of these things, but when I try, they're no where to be found .  .  . at least in this area. Anyway, Goodwill had boxes of old stainless steel spoons so I settled for two at 25 cents apiece.  One slightly larger than the other. I spray painted them with bright silver paint so they would look uniform and not slightly used.

This gift was breeze to make.  I took the easy way out and used some stick on white vinyl lettering since the board was a faux black velvet. No stenciling here.

I put strips of painter's tape on the board so I could line up the letters.

My spacing was off with the 2" letters so I had to make three lines of wording.

After lining up the lettering, I glued the spoons down using E6000 and allowed to dry overnight.

Since it is a gift I placed the finished piece on a stand to see how it would look.  Marvelous!

Anyone visiting their home would get a kick out of seeing this.  I know I would.

What a great play on words, Mr. & Mrs. Spoon!
This is for you!

Happy Anniversary!!!

Take a little time to enjoy,

PS: My niece sent me this  Patricia Witherspoon's photo.

Burlap Leaf TableRunner

Fall is in the air and we all know what that means . . . new fall projects!  I found pretty orange burlap in the remnant section at Hobby Lobby and couldn't resist the price - a couple of dollars for almost two yards of fabric.  Hot d ...!  I've always wanted to make a whimsical fall table runner, something quirky and different.  If you follow me on my blog, you know I can do quirky and different.
I'm not good at drawing so I copied a leaf and blew it up as much as I could to fill a 8½"x11" sheet of paper. Then I cut it out and used it as a pattern on my burlap which is really a vibrant shade of orange. So beautiful!

I doubled the fabric and cut two out at a time. I guess I could have made more than one pattern .  .  .

After cutting out the leaves, I outlined the edges with white puffy paint and let dry for four hours following the directions.

It took about three bottles to outline 28 leaves.

After the puffy paint dried I held a steam iron over the leaves to puff the paint.

Next, I laid out the leaves in a pattern with a row of leaves down the center, flanked by leaves on each side, making them all touch. I glued where they met with Aileen's Extra Tacky Glue.

I love the design!

Do you think it's quirky and different?

It sure didn't take long to make!

And I still have a little less than a yard of the orange burlap left. Who knows what I'll make next!

Take a little time to enjoy,
