Faux Succulent & Woven Newspaper Napkin Ring

I had a few newspaper rods left over from making this and I thought of weaving some of them into a napkin ring and placing a faux succulent on top.  Why succulents?  Succulents have become so popular because of their low maintenance requirements, unusual plant shapes and stunning colors and right now they're really hot and trendy.  So how cool would making a faux succulent with woven newspapers as a napkin ring be?   Hot and trendy and going green at the same time!!!

Weaving five strands of newspaper rods together is easier than you think.  And I've got a very simply way to do it.

Just glue the five rod top tips together.

Once dry, gently separate the rods with three on one side and two on the other.

Take the end rod from the group of three and turn it over to the two beside it and place it inside the group of two.

Now that two group has become a three group. Take the outside rod of the new three group and fold it over to the two beside it and place it inside the group of two, making it three rods together.

Continue taking the third outside rod, folding it over to the inside two rods, making a herringbone pattern of the newspaper rods along the way.

 How easy is this?

I measured seven and a half inches for the length of my napkin ring and glued the rods together at that point.  Once dry I cut off the ends and glued them together.

Next, I applied several coats of mod podge to strengthen and seal the paper.

Painted it green and sealed it again with glossy varnish.

Once the varnish was dry I added the faux succulent using E6000 and clips to hold in place and allowed  to dry overnight.

Love this look!

Lifelike succulents attached to a recycled woven newspaper ring brings a fresh outdoor look to any table setting.

Have you gotten on the succulents or recycling bandwagon yet?

Take a little time to enjoy

and

Happy Crafting!

  1. That is too cute! I'm not into the succulent craze yet...I like them ok just not necessarily for decorating. I might get on it with these though. :) I like that you could use whatever you have on hand to decorate the rings with. Very cool idea.

  18. Such a pretty idea, you must get so much pleasure from creating such beautiful projects. The napkin ring with the faux succulent trim is so effective. I managed to kill my succulents so I definitely should think about faux ones.

  19. I am all into succulents right now (well, me 90% of the rest of the world's population ;-) ), and these are just adorable! I'm like Kathleen, though, if I'm not killing them, my cat is, so I think I need to go the faux route, too. Lovely job, Gail!
