DIY Boho Placemat Wall Decor

Boho wall designs are very trendy and popular especially on sites like Pottery Barn and Anthropologie. Most are handmade by talented weavers from Africa and Vietnam. I was looking at a few and noticed that some of the woven bases looked like placemats I have but no longer use. They had become a bit discolored and tattered in places. But not too bad to use for this month's Do It Over Designers upcycle project. DIY Boho Placemat Wall Decor
In case you don't know, the Do It Over Designers is a group of talented bloggers who love to recycle/upcycle/DIY, hosted by Anne @The Apple Street Cottage. It happens the 4th Saturday of every other month and it's all about taking something old and/or unused and 'doing it over' into something new. Anything from fabric, old dishes, and decor to dressers and hutches. Items found in closets, cabinets, barns, garages, yard sales, thrift stores, you name it! I hope you'll visit all the super creative bloggers to see their amazing "do over" projects.  The list of participants are at the end of this post.

How To:
Items used include:
  • Placemat
  • Multi-color 3ply 1 skein yarn
  • Large eye needle
  • Yardstick/scissors
This placemat wall decor has a geometric design made using multi-color yarn. I wasn't quite sure how much yarn I would need, but was sure one skein would be enough. I had made a yarn motif on a basket and one skein was more than enough.

To begin making the design, I measured out 10 yards of yarn using a yardstick. Then threaded the yarn on the needle. I wanted the design to go around a center
circle so I tried to form one using the center rows of the placemat. Then I counted down approximately seven "rows" to where the tip of the yarn design would end. And began by inserting the needle on the backside between the edges of the woven fibers .  .  .
and wrapping around the fibers four times and then moving up one fiber segment and .  .  .

wrapping four more times for each segment -  for a total of seven segments.
Then repeating the process going in the opposite direction while matching each segment across.

Backside of placemat: When the yarn runs out, replace on backside by tying in a couple of knots, old yarn end with new end of a 10 yd piece.

Continue creating yarn design while moving around the placemat circle. One center design segment is complete in this photo.

Ending yarn and tying on another piece.

It's amazing the type of designs that can be made using this wrapping technique. But I must say doing this was very time consuming! I binged watch two series on tv working on this one  But that's what crafting is all about!

Once the main design was finish, I thought I was finished, too. But after looking at it, I decided to add a border around the edges.
So, I used the same technique for adding the border - wrapping yarn around three fiber segments,

until finished - for sure! Lol!

Boho chic! What a great way to upcycle old placemats!
