Burlap Magnolia Stem Knockoff

One of my favorite things to do is stopping by Pier1 to see what's new each season. I've gotten many inspirations by doing this.  I was there last week checking out the new fall arrivals.  There were so many handcrafted items  that inspired me.  Some, I knew would be easy to do, others, not so much.  I saw a bunch of burlap magnolia stems displayed in a large glass vase.  I thought the flowers pretty and different from your usual burlap bloom out there in blogland.  With lots of burlap leftover in my stash, I went home excited about trying to duplicate these awesome looking flowers.

The first thing I needed to do was coat the natural burlap fabric with mod podge to make it stiff and shapeable. While the burlap was drying, I made a petal pattern out of poster board, trying to mimic the petals at Pier1.  Once the fabric was dry and the petals cut out, I tried my best to shape each petal by rubbing a small ball in the center of it while cupping it in the palm of my hand to curve the burlap as pictured.  This did not work.  I then realized that the Pier1 petals had a small wire in the center.  So I got out some floral stem wire (only had brown), and painted the wire tan to match the burlap. After drying, I cut the stem wire into two inch pieces.  The wire was glued to the center using Aileen Fast Tacky Glue.  For the stamen, I taped seven q-tips together with floral tape and cut in half, dipped them in mod podge so they could swell and dry fluff & stiff, and painted after drying.

To form the flower, I swirled the petal tips around a pencil for additional shaping (you can do this before or after formation) and then hot glued four petals to the stamen first and next glued the other petals randomly layering between the gaps. using seven or eight petals per flower.

I know you're wondering what happened to the natural burlap magnolias.  I made one of each color as samples first and decided since I already had the white burlap coated with mod podge from another project, I went with using that to make all of the flowers. Besides,  I think the white magnolia flowers are prettier with the tan colored stamen and a bit more realistic (if that's possible).  I will definitely be making something else with the natural color blooms.

Oh, and I left the floral wire stem as is instead of painting them. That got to be a bit much.

I like the blooms open, but you can close them if you want.

Have you been inspired by any handcrafted favorites for Fall yet?  I sure have!

Take a little time to enjoy,
